Sound and Touch

What does “sound and touch” have to do with the piano?

Everything.

Concert piano technicians regularly repair and improve the sound of the grand piano through a process they call voicing. Voicing a concert grand Steinway means changing the tone quality of the instrument to satisfy either the artist who is playing the piano, or to fit the idiosyncrasies of the acoustics of the concert hall and stage. Additionally, note to note evenness in tone quality can be dramatically improved with voicing.

Artist and Room... tailoring the sound to fit the piano player’s personal tone quality needs, and to sound the best the instrument can possibly sound in the room in which it is located. Whether it is a concert instrument on the concert stage, or a personal piano in your home, voicing work finds the best possible sound of the piano for the instrument, the piano player, and the acoustics of the room.

The experience of playing any musical instrument is a tactile connection with the nuanced sound that is being created. The ‘feel’ of any acoustic grand piano is unique to that instrument, and intimately connected to the sound of the piano and the subtleties of pianistic technique.

The ability to regulate the touch and feel of the piano keyboard is a rare skill in present day piano technology. It requires not only the ability to play the instrument skillfully, but a high degree of craftsmanship and artistry in manipulating piano hammer felt along with numerous other components of the piano.
