rebuilding
The finest pianos are largely manufactured by hand, and that is
how we rebuild them: one at a time (unlike larger "mass-production"
rebuilding shops). We use the finest available parts, many (such
as the strings, pinblocks and soundboards) custom-built for each
instrument. Our re-manufacturing process includes refinishing the
case as well as the cast-iron plate inside. All the lettering and
logos are meticulously restored, and when we can't repair old ivory,
we can replace it with unused, legally imported ivory of excellent
quality.
We cater to the requirements of the professional pianist and specialize
in instruments for performance spaces and recording studios, as
well for the homes of the serious amateur.
Our rebuilding
process will produce a piano that has structural integrity and musical
quality equal or superior to a new instrument. Your rebuilt piano
will maintain its value for another lifetime. Click

touch
balancing
It is possible, using a variety of techniques, to "balance" a keyboard's
response to produce a dramatically improved quality of "touch." An
uneven action can be evened out, a very "heavy" hard-to-play instrument
can be made more easy and responsive, and a keyboard that is too fast or insubstantial
can be made to feel more solid and controllable. In various ways, the action
parts can be precisely measured and re-weighted, or the geometry of the action
itself can be changed very slightly to produce extremely satisfying results.
These techniques are used in every rebuilding project, but can also be used separately
to
improve the performance of even a brand-new piano.
home piano care
Our technicians are available on a limited basis for home tunings
and small-scale in-home repairs on grand pianos in the Triad area.
We highly recommend installation and use of humidity control systems
and string covers, and we are happy to order and install them for
you. See below for more about tuning, voicing, and regulation.
concert
preparation
Concert instruments are high-performance machines, and performing
artists make special demands on the instruments they use; our technicians
will consult with you about your expectations for the piano and
the acoustical properties of the performance space and perform
the
necessary tunings, voicing adjustments, and regulating. Arrangements
can be made to have a technician on call during the performance
or recording session (within the southeastern US).
tuning,
voicing, and regulating
Any instrument, whether in a home, a church basement, or a concert
hall, needs regular maintenance. Ideally, two tunings a year are
sufficient given the seasonal climate changes in North Carolina.
Voicing and regulating, which determine how the piano sounds and
feels, should be checked routinely and adjusted on a regular basis.
piano
locator referrals
We are able, on a limited basis, to offer clients a "matching
service" between them and pianos we happen to know about. We
also occasionally have a small number of restored pianos for sale.
